This is something that comes up occasionally.
If you’re tensing your muscles to keep the other guy or gal from doing the technique, then you’re resisting and that’s not good. If it’s unconscious, I would suggest working on your sense of relaxation. Try to feel when you’re reacting and cut it short before you tense up.
However, [...]

Grappling responses to losing
August 15th, 2008 · 13 Comments · Judo, Shuaijiao/Grappling
We have two very interesting examples of how and how not to lose from the Olympics. One from judo and one from wrestling. The atheletes’ responses are quite different.
Former Olympic and world judo champion Keiji Suzuki said he felt “empty” and was considering his future in the sport after suffering a humiliating -100kg first round [...]

Japan borrows from wrestling the West
August 11th, 2008 · 5 Comments · Judo, Shuaijiao/Grappling
Below is a fascinating article about how judoka ended up borrowing Western wrestling techniques and adding them to the sport. I’m really interested in this for several reasons. Here are a few:
1. Why was Japan willing and able to do something like this and China was not?
2. Did the addition of wrestling techniques change judo? [...]

BJJ, sensitivity, and “unworkable” techniques
July 31st, 2008 · 8 Comments · Shuaijiao/Grappling
The following is a great post by Roy Harris, a 4th degree BJJ black belt, on how he makes his wrist locks work. How he does it and where he gets that material will definitely be of interest to readers. All emphasis is mine.
Timing and sensitivity are not developed from practicing BJJ. Rather, they are [...]

This looks promising

This is Mark Hatmaker’s latest video and it looks like a good one. Grappling dummies are getting cheaper and more common so a video on how to use it make a lot of sense. I loved his Floor Bar workout video because he showed a whole lot of basic wrestling skills (I reviewed it here). [...]

Redbelt: teaching and identity
May 30th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Shuaijiao/Grappling
Even though I haven’t seen it yet, what intrigues me about Redbelt is Mike’s apparent struggle for identity as a teacher. Here’s a great quote from an Amazon review of the book the Courage to Teach that sums up what I mean:
two key concepts: identity and integrity. For each individual teacher, the need to [...]

Obsessed with Redbelt
May 29th, 2008 · 6 Comments · Shuaijiao/Grappling
I’m obsessed now. I’m dying to see this. The story really resonates with me, at least what I’ve read. I like that the main character runs a BJJ school in LA but is disturbed by what he sees in MMA. Apparently, he tries to stay out of the comps and maintain his honor, but he [...]

Mike Martello has lowered the price of his upcoming training camp in Beijing. The price for the whole month is now 1600 Euros (around US$2458 currently) and two weeks is 975 Euros (US$1498 currently). The previous price for the month was 1900 Euros (around US$3000). So that’s a US$500 savings. The dates are June 30th [...]

Mike Martello’s 2008 Camp and a Great DVD
January 28th, 2008 · 4 Comments · Shuaijiao/Grappling
This is the preview for Mike’s 2008 camp, and it looks great. The focus seems to be shuai jiao (Chinese wrestling) this time, and they couldn’t have found a better teacher. This footage was mostly taken from the teacher’s 2-disc DVD on shuai jiao. This is the best instructional video I’ve seen out of China. [...]

Unique groundfighting

Maybe Master Wong isn’t everybody’s cup of tea. But I sure like him. Here he is doing some of the most innovative groundfighting I’ve ever seen. This is not just BJJ in a new package.
What do you guys think?
