The craziest way to start a MA school

October 3rd, 2008 · 6 Comments · MA as business

If you’re going to open a martial arts school, whatever you do don’t do what this guy did. I have heard a lot of crazy stories in the MA world from a business point of view, but I’ve never, ever seen anything like this. There’s a whole world of advice just waiting in that thread [...]

This guy is brilliant

Take a black belt in taekwondo/karate, add in some basic grappling and a whole lot of yoga and you get Budokon. Cameron Shayne has skills, that’s for sure. In another youtube clip, he does a full planche pose. Nice. And NO GUT! He’s in shape and gives the impression that his method will also work [...]

MA as a luxury item?

August 7th, 2008 · 14 Comments · MA as business

This post from the Cheng Hsin blog asks some interesting questions in hard economic times. Is the study of MA considered a luxury? Will people abandon it when times are tough? What about teaching more obscure arts?
As martial artists (I should say martial arts freaks because that’s what we are), we see this stuff from [...]

Further thoughts on socialism in martial arts

February 3rd, 2008 · 4 Comments · MA as business

Below is a long comment made by Rob Redmond of the 24 Fighting Chickens Blog regarding my post on his ideas about socialism in the MA. It’s quite long and I want people to read what he’s written, so I’m making a post out of it.
Again, as someone living in Taiwan, I see the effects [...]

Why do some martial artists hate children?

January 19th, 2008 · 10 Comments · MA as business

It never ceases to amaze me — every time the issue of opening a school comes up, someone will mention kids classes and then someone else will go on a rant about how that destroys the arts. I’ve never heard this angle argued in Taiwan nor in Japan when I lived there. It seems to [...]

It gets my vote at least. Why do we so seldom see this level of creativity and humor in martial arts? We need more of it!

Socialism in martial arts

April 6th, 2007 · 11 Comments · MA as business

A while back, wujimon turned me on to a new blog — 24 Fighting Chickens. Don’t let the name throw you, this is a fantastic blog written by a karate teacher who also is an MBA. His insights into running martial arts schools is the best I’ve ever seen anywhere. His articles are actually worth [...]

Roy Harris on being a good instructor

February 9th, 2007 · 6 Comments · MA as business

The following is an article written by Roy Harris, of BJJ fame, about being a good instructor. I’m blogging the whole thing because Roy has a lot of teaching experience and he lays out his few points well. Honestly, I think not enough MA teachers really care how effectively they are teaching, but then again [...]

Martial arts school mission statement part 2

September 3rd, 2006 · No Comments · MA as business

David Ross wrote this thread over at KFOnline and I’m archiving it here for easy access. Some of you may find this interesting because he talks about whether to teach group classes or just go with privates. His discussion of training only “serious” people versus training everyone is also very enlightening. He makes good points [...]

MA as a business: mission statement

August 10th, 2006 · 1 Comment · MA as business

I got the following from a thread over at KFOnline. I’m always keen to follow any thread there on running a school and/or teaching MA as a profession. There is precious little info on this, so I try to archive what I can find here on the blog.
Even those of you not interested in ever [...]
