Here are some clips I’m enjoying right now.
This is Ronaldo Jacare, a BJJ and judo black belt. Love his throws in BJJ tourneys. Lots of excellent transitions.
And here’s a great highlight clip of judo ne-waza. The styles are different if you look close but there’s still a great deal of overlap.
I’m really coming around [...]

This looks to be Rhadi Ferguson’s latest DVD project “The Effectiveness of Morote Gari” and I’m glad to see it. Morote gari (double leg takedown) is one of the best takedowns a smaller guy can use against a bigger guy. It’s a great throw and deserves to have more attention paid to it.
If you click [...]

In martial arts like taichi and aikido, we hear a lot about joining centers when throwing and how that is a good thing. And it is. Many throws rely on this principle. For example, all hip throws require that you bring the person’s center towards your own, join centers and then execute the throw.
Taichi forms [...]

I was reading some statistics a while back that analyzed the top throws used in Japanese judo matches over a period of 20 years or so. I was shocked to see that the throw known in judo as uchimata was an overwhelming winner. It was by far the top technique, nothing else even came close.

These got posted on judo forum. They are awesome examples of throws done in UFC, etc. The “Randleplex” is a real nasty one.

The following are two excellent clips from Karo Parisyan, a name you should become very familiar with. He’s adapted judo to work in a no-gi environment but what he has to say works very well for CIMA and other arts like aikido. He addresses points like slipping because your opponent is sweaty. He makes the [...]

Playing Chessmaster 10 is teaching me so many things. When Rhadi Ferguson said that Olympic athletes are sometimes obsessed with chess, I didn’t quite see why. Now I have an inkling of an idea. Here’s what I’ve discovered so far.
In judo there are several ways to win. The judo purists prefer “ippon judo” where you [...]

I watched a blackbelt in my judo club get his knee dislocated the other night.
There may be many reasons why that happened. But I took away one powerful lesson from it.
My club has produced many, many BBs in the time it’s been open. But we really only have a few guys that show up regularly [...]

This is something that comes up occasionally.
If you’re tensing your muscles to keep the other guy or gal from doing the technique, then you’re resisting and that’s not good. If it’s unconscious, I would suggest working on your sense of relaxation. Try to feel when you’re reacting and cut it short before you tense up.
However, [...]

We’ve gotten some comments about judo’s reliance on the gi. Actually it doesn’t. It depends on whether the player wants to take his skillsets outside further to gi-less training.
This is a great example of judo in an MMA environment. Lots of good examples there. Go Karo! Love his drop seio-nage.
This is much less professional but [...]
