Guoshu leitai fights

February 17th, 2008 · 3 Comments · Bagua and/or xingyi, Taijiquan

More video has been made available of the GuoShu leitai fights:

This clip comes courtesy of Mike Patterson and showcases his fighters in the 1996 and 2000 competitions. The footage from the 2000 event is the arena with no people. Some good combos and solid training in there.

This clip is form the 2004 competition. I didn’t even know they were still having the tourney. It was obviously held in Tainan and on a floating platform, no less. The GuoShu association has been hurting for money since the DPP took over so they’ve reverted to holding the tourney where they are located instead of in Taipei. If they have one every four years, then there should be a tourney this year, as well.

Has anyone heard anything?

One of the things I like about watching Patterson’s fighters is that they all have knockout power in their hands. The format is pretty cool too– the small gloves mean that people can still use the kung fu movements that bigger gloves wipe out. Good stuff.

Tim, much of what you call “knockout power” appears to be fighters not keeping their hands up. Despite the small gloves, I think that most of these fighters could benefit significantly from conventional boxing or MMA training.
