This is another look at Tu Zong-ren’s Chen style. This is the old frame first road. Tu laoshi was the second disciple of Du Yu-ze and I wrote more about him here and here. He was prevented from showing his taiji for many years due to a promise to his teacher to not show it to outsiders. But Tu laoshi has decided that times and have changed and he has courageously decided to film his frame so that future generations will have access to seeing it. His openness is a rare and great thing.

Tu Laoshi is really a nice and knowledgable person, eager to share his knowhow with anybody willing to listen. Only met him once, but we got hooked up, exchange mails now and then.
And it is good to know that some other flavours of old Chen style Taiji are still alive and well, even many people and many forums try to brand these Taiwan versions as unorthodox.
Dave, you mentioned often about the 6 old Chen stylists having come to Taiwan. We know about Du Yuze, Wang Helin, Pan Yongzhou, Wang Jinrang, but are there really no successors of Guo Qingshan and Wang Mengbi?

Hermann,
I don’t know of any successors of theirs. Wang taught my teacher Zhou Bao-fu and a teacher in Tamshui. I can’t find any others. The teacher in Tamshui is not wiling to talk to other people. So I’ve hit a dead end.

Dave, thanks so much for finding and posting Tu Zong-ren’s lao jia clip. That is one of the cleanest and most well-balanced performances I’ve seen. I’ve always wanted to see more of this line ever since watching the brief, grainy black-and-white footage of Du Yuze. I think it compares favorably with most of what we see from Chenjiagou. It would be nice to see some of the tuishou from Du Yuze’s students.
Cheers for 2008, and keep these great finds coming. Thanks.
