Yin Yoga– for free!

October 16th, 2007 · 6 Comments · Yoga/Daoyin

Unfortunately, I can’t link to a video from this site to show you their material. But it’s a fantastic site! I can’t believe what they have up for free.

Here is Paul Grilley’s Yin Yoga video for free.

I have blogged about this great system before. Now all you have to do is sit down with a pen and paper and take notes. Out of the five and half hours of the DVD, over three of them are here for free viewing.

In fact, most of Pranayama’s wonderful DVDs are here for free.

Watching Grilley’s system in play is really impressive. I’m so glad that he emphasizes the range of motion and the differences within all the single postures. The more I learn about martial arts and yoga show me that there simply is NO ONE RIGHT position for all people. He shows that there are several correct positions for each posture, depending on people’s bodies. His Yoga Anatomy video apparently even shows bones from cadavers to show how holding one position for everyone is almost impossible. Bones are VERY important, and emphasizing that aspect makes for a smarter system. Most yoga books show a swami in the so-called “ideal” position with no respect whatsoever to body differences. This is a huge drawback up books, especially of the various gurus.

I don’t want to do the yoga that is right for them. I want to do the yoga is right for ME.

Here’s a quote that sums this up well, “Figure out what is the main point of each posture. Then, everything else is secondary.”

Love it!

He’s right. Seriously guys, this looks like a great resource.

I tried one of the videos, the child’s pose stuff - pretty cool that they’re for free. Loved the first half hour, then had this irresistable urge to punch that guy in the face - he just won’t STFU! :) He keeps saying the same thing over and over again.

Ah well… I feel like my Yang has balanced my Yin now by getting it all out :)

The great thing about Grilley talking is that he gives you the theory behind the system — not just the movements. This is just a simplistic “follow along” yoga video. So instead of just giving you fish, he teaches YOU how to fish, yourself so you can go out and catch your own fish.

Once you understand his system, you can modify other yoga poses with the Yin Yoga principles as you see fit. To me, this is much better. Most of my yoga videos are “move into downward dog. Now stretch.”
