Well, this is more than we had before. This is a much longer clip of Du Yu-ze doing the laojia yilu. I have written before on how controversial this clip is. I’m surprised this much is up. I HIGHLY recommend that you download it now that it’s out, if this clip means anything to you. Of course, now that it’s out, this will likely stay out. If it gets taken down, people like me will just put it up again.
Unfortunately, it’s just the yilu and not the full video with the paochui included. Notice the shot at the end has him going into another form from a different angle than the yilu. That’s kind of a tease. Grrrrr…..
Still, just looking at this much has already answered questions for me. I guess that further reflection and comparison will reveal more insights.
Nore on Du Yu-ze here.
Just gotta love youtube (when it works). Enjoy.

Looks very like Yang style doesn’t it? - same sequence, same postures (brush knee, ward off, repulse monkey, fist under elbow, etc) just done with fast punches and jumps.
Who was his teacher?

It does seem similar to Yang style. I was wondering about the hand and forearm shape that I learned when I did this version of Chen and whether or not it came from Yang style. But here’s Du doing it exactly as I was taught it.
I have to add, though, that the body mechanics from Du’s line seemed very different from the Yang style that I’ve done. So there are differences.
Strangely enough, the Chen I learned through Wang Meng-bi’s lineage is even more Yang-like, meaning that it doesn’t conflict with my CPL taiji. So I stuck with that version.
Du’s teacher was Chen Yan-xi, Chen Fa-ke’s father. So this version of Chen didn’t fall far from the tree. It’s as solid lineage-wise as you can get.

If you look at modern twisty, twisty, fast/slow Chen it’s hard to see how it is related to smooth, slow, gentle modern Yang style, but if you look at older styles you can see how they both diverged from the same source.
One root, 10,000 branches.

Yes,
Coming from Pan Wing Chow lineage (which, IMHO, employs a very similar Shen Fa) I have always felt that these methods can be seen as having more similarities to Yang styles then other branches of Chen.

Hi,
I think is more similar to Zhao Bao taiji quan Da jia, jin gang dao chui, fan zhang lan zha yi, lui feng si bi, dan bian, jin gang dao chui, bai he liang zhi, etc…
This is I feel.

That’s the beatiful form I practice - it looks great - but even feels even better doing it!
