Excellent ZMQ apps

I rarely see ZMQ taiji that I think is any good. This is an exception. The guy demonstrating does a excellent job of going through all the basic apps of ZMQ style, one right after another. I like the fact that he doesn’t do endless varieties of push — as I’ve seen so many ZMQ people do.

So my only question is that if there are these great apps in the ZMQ form, then why don’t we see these done in push hands from ZMQ groups? Don’t people practice their apps in a push hands format any more?

This is damned good stuff. I’m gonna have to save it for future reference. Thanks, D.R.

That was quite nice…. but…… I could only watch half-way through……. almost every single app I saw was based around *grabbing* the wrist or forearm of the attacking punch (single whip was an exception).

You simply can’t rely on grabbing the arm that’s punching you all the time - it’s too difficult against proper punches.

I think Graham has a point. A wrist grab or arm grab for that matter can easily be missed…

On the whole, it was good, though

    Kind regards,

    Tomita

Yeah, there are still several schools of 37 in Taiwan which work on applications, also without grabbing (not allowed in PH anyway!). That is really difficult against a good puncher as Graham and Tomita have said.
But, Dave, as you want to compete in Taizhong(?), you better study the PH rules first, because most applications are not allowed in fixed step and even in moving step, some might disqualify you very quickly.
As most younger people train for the competition frame, they are limited through the rules, so they train what is allowed, having less interes in what would be possible.
So, a big question on those bull fights of modern PH must be asked.

    Herman,
That’s a good point. I have looked at the rules but I don’t see anything about not grabbing. I did see that applications of peng, lu, ji, an, cai, lieh, zhou, and kao are allowed. Qinna is allowed, too. So I don’t see how grabbing isn’t allowed. But I have heard what you’re saying before.

I’ll write up a post about it so you can take a look.

Good find. He’d be a good person to train with. I wonder what else he has studied.

The majority of taiji apps are for grappling (close in range) not for fighting at kickboxers range. Of course you don’t want to grab a punch duh. The strategy of good taiji is to arrive first. strike, in doing so close the distance then at this close (grappling)range you can grab stuff that is right there to be grabbed if need be .. taiji is a full 75% grappling - so say Tim Cartmell ;) haha

    Good clip!
