This is teacher Andrew Chung of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (yaah! home!) doing his version of the CPL form that he learned from Col. Y.W. Chang.

One thing that struck me about this performance was how much it looked like the Wang Shu-jin versions that I’ve seen. He only makes it a little over half way through the form in the time alloted, but you do get to see the bulk of the movements in the form.

Always good to see another version of this form.

The poster on Youtube identifies it as (yet another) “Old Yang form.” :P

    Tom,
Some people refer to it as that because it’s basically old Yang with a lot of silk reeling mixed in, although the silk reeling is hard to see in most of these clips. The “yet another” part I don’t get. Maybe the poster has been on youtube too much. :)

    Dave,

I was referring to the multitude of “Old Yang” styles out there . . . not just on Youtube (though have you ever searched on Youtube for “Old Yang”? Two pages of videos . . . admittedly mostly Erle Montaigue heh). Sifting through tons of wheat to get a few grains of really good taiji. Those are the practitioners to go feel hands-on . . . if they aren’t retired. And of course, there are so many good practitioners of all styles we’ll probably never encounter, because they are out practicing and not posting on blogs or putting up clips on Youtube. :P

BUT . . . I’d already done my training for the day before I posted here LOL

I emailed Andrew Chung with that very question re: Old Yang label and he replied to me kindly and quickly as follows: ‘ The form is actually compiled from the teachings Chen Pan Ling Recieved from Wu Chien Chuan steming from Yang Pan Hou and instruction from Yang Shao Hou steming from Yang Chien Hou, my teacher was a senior disciple of Chen Pan Ling.’

    Best wishes- John

    Tom,
Yeah, that’s what I meant: maybe the poster is burned out watching all the old Yang forms that turn up on youtube and elsewhere. I don’t know. Visting these people is one thing, but honestly you may be better sticking with youtube. Finding anyone with real skill is rare — old Yang, new Yang, etc. it just doesn’t really matter.

John, That fits with what I’ve been told about CPL taiji and what CPL wrote in his taiji book.

    John,

Thanks for following up with Mr. Chung. I like his demonstration of the CPL form. His recounting of the root sources for CPL’s form makes me envious of Chen Pan-ling’s experience. Timing is everything in who we get to train with.
