This is one of the best examples of IMA spear/long pole work that I’ve seen in a while. This guy really knows how to work it.

Interesting points: he does the basic beng (thrust) movement with the correct turn in of the right knee and hip at 0:02. He then does thrust with a half step at 0:16. That’s good movement and shows how spear work should be done with varying stance work.

He clearly is using lots of backbowing starting near the 0:40 mark. I can’t believe that he’s powering the spear thrusts with just the backbow. I can’t do that. I have to get the hip involved. Something to work toward.

As I pointed out these exercises are very similar to what we train in the da qiang of bajiquan.

I believe it to be a very, very necessary but not totally sufficient condition for higher levels of the art in bajiquan, Yang and Chen taijiquan, and xing yi.

I am aware that this training alone won’t necessary thrust you to the peak of martial arts skill but it will get you started and it will also help develop the “steel wrapped in cotton” body. I know someone he trained like this for 9 years and its no bullshit. He has it and all he needs now is refinement via mind/meditation training.

However, none of this comes overnight. My friend, Jim Finley, also trained the stance/breath work of xiao baji while using the da qiang training between sets. His last set of xiao baji, before ending the training session, was hard, fast fajing expression while the prior sets where held from 3, 4, and 8 breaths while directing thought to the head, shoulders, elbows, hands, tailbone, hips knees, and feet.

This really worked for him. His punching power is pretty awesome and if you block it, bone on bone so to speak, you really do get hurt, badly.

    Good stuff!
