It appears that an introduction is in order. This is Su Dong-cheng. He is one of the top people trained by Hong Yi-xiang. He left to open a school in Japan in the early ’70’s. His training background includes taiji, xingyi, and bagua, mostly from Hong’s school.
The taiji that he shows in this clip is […]

January 30th, 2007 · 7 Comments · Other MA

I was involved in a discussion about tongbei taiji — a hybrid style of these two great arts — a while back and this is the ino that I came across. I hope to have more info on this interesting style in the future.
“Zhang Duen Xi(張敦熙) is another famous practitioner of Tong Bei Quan(通臂拳) who […]

January 28th, 2007 · 4 Comments · Chen taiji

It’s official: Feng Zhi-qiang will be an honored guest at the Beijing training session I talked about in this post. He’ll also be teaching some of his material to trip participants. I don’t think “excited” quite covers it for me now. Haha. Long-time readers will know of my admiration for him and I had […]

Thomas on dangers of reverse breathing

January 27th, 2007 · 5 Comments · Chen taiji, Qigong

Thomas wrote this comment in response to my post on reverse breathing. This kind of comment goes above and beyond the call of duty so I am making it a post of it’s own. I can’t thank him enough for his insights into this and, while it may not satisfy everyone, I think it adds […]

All of the videos follow the same format. He gives an intro, basics are shown, the […]

Dangers of reverse breathing qigong

January 24th, 2007 · 31 Comments · Qigong

Reverse breathing is very dangerous and has lots of health risks.
One Chen teacher I learned it from had me use force to push the dantien down on exhale. He said that doing this would greatly increase my power. I practiced the method with him for a half hour or so and then left class. I […]

More pics of Han Qing-tan

January 23rd, 2007 · 8 Comments · Mantis/long fist, Taijiquan

I need to thank Curtis Adkins for these pics he took of Han Qing-tan back in 1962 or 63. It was very gracious of Curtis to share these with us.

This is Han doing spear versus sword with Liang Dong Cai 梁棟材 in 228 Park.

Here, Han is teaching his taiji to a group. Han learned his […]

Taiji vs. BJJ

January 21st, 2007 · 3 Comments · Other MA, Taijiquan

So I have to thank Tom for this post because he posted this over at EF and then deleted the thread just as I was about to comment. Thanks, Tom.
This is an interesting encounter that Tom found on this blog. It documents what happened when a BJJ guy met a taiji guy in […]

Problem with frame of reference

January 20th, 2007 · 7 Comments · Theory

I see this a lot: someone sees something that they haven’t seen before so they automatically dismiss it or claim that it’s polluted by another style. This happens a lot with the versions of Chen style that we have here in Taiwan. It doesn’t always look exactly like what is expected, so it is considered […]
