This is an interesting film. Please try your best to ignore the annoying Japanese language overlay.

As I’ve said in the past, Feng doing just abut anything deserves to be watched. I still feel that he’s probably the best there is. We’re lucky that this film has been made public.

IMO, taiji really is the study of these 8 basic jings and this is a great intro to them. He gives many examples of most of the energies, with the exception of “lieh” unless I blinked and missed something. Some of his examples will surprise some people and open up the minds of others. I think some will be surprised about doing, say, peng with a knee. Pretty enlightening stuff.

He also gives a great demo of using the 8 jings against a partner. Interestingly enough, we see high-level teachers do this often but I don’t see many students actually practice the 8 jings with a partner the way that Feng does. The examples that Feng shows would make a great practice routine for anyone that wants to deepen their understanding of taiji.

About lieh, I’m a bit curious as to why that one got the short treatment. I’ve been very fortunate to get some concrete examples of lieh usage from my teachers and it’s become one of my favorite moves. But then I felt that my system sort of gave peng the short treatment as a individual jing to be practiced as more of an attack. Some of Feng’s suggestions on peng will definitely make it into my workout routine.

Enjoy.

I don’t know whether to post this comment with this entry or the next one.

Sadly, I coudn’t derive as much benefit from that clip as Chinese/Japanese speakers can. But, I found this video where Ma Jiangbao (Ma Yuehliang’s son) demonstrates the 8 energies pretty interesting. Starting a 7:45. He demonstrates Kao with his back, Lieh with an arm bar, etc…

He does do a couple of brief “lie”s. Very interesting stuff. He seems to be putting so little effort and yet just blows the opponent away. Must have incredible rooting and connectedness or something. I’ve also never seen a “chest kao” before. Great move for sport events I think.

    Aboroth,
Thanks for the link. I’ll try to take a look at that soon.

    Casey,
Good eyes. That’s what I get for multi-tasking! I’m always impressed with Feng. Glad you enjoyed the clip.
