VCDs on Sun style xingyi and bagua have been strangely rare so far. So have VCDs on the arts of Fu Zhen-song, the famous bagua expert. The Sun style has been represented on video mostly by Sun’s daughter, who despite being good, has long been past her prime. Students simply need a better version to follow.
This new VCD series offered through Plum Pubs looks pretty good. I haven’t seen it pop up here in Taiwan and it may never. But if it does, I will grab a few to look at.
I’ve always been intrigued by Sun style. I like their simpler approach to HeBei xingyi and Cheng bagua because I feel it has the essentials with out all the “hua” (flowers, development) that may get in the way of understanding what is truly important. Small systems automatically appeal to my sense of efficiency.
But then again, I have heard that Sun’s xingyi and bagua systems are actually much richer than most people know. We in the West have only seen a fraction of what the Sun styles have to offer.
With a video series like this, hopefully the Sun arts will start opening up. Now if a good series on Sun style taiji would just appear.
