Fake swords: don’t be a victim

This Google video says it all: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5243836417224631021&q=Katana

A shopping network was attempting to sell some fake Japanese swords and the presenter got a little more education than he bargained for. I hope he got his wound attended to and that he didn’t need surgery.

Many, many people are buying the most worthless junk off Ebay. Swords that are “200-250 years old” and “have been used in battle” from the “Ming dynasty,” etc., etc., all for the low price of US$200. A sucker is born every minute.

I understand that people want this stuff and that good swords are hard to find, but people who call themselves martial artists need to put a little more effort into their education. It’s much better to buy a modern reproduction IMO than it is to buy an obvious fake to train with. Some modern reproductions like the Adam Hsu jian that I reviewed are specifically designed for practice and will hold up a lot better than these fakes.

“We…uh….may need emergency surgery in the studio.” Yep. Classic.

Don’t wind up like the guy in the video.
